The ACT Government has introduced a waste management strategy that will guide the ACT in reducing waste and recovering resources to achieve a sustainable, carbon-neutral Canberra.
Developed in consultation with the community, the ACT Waste Management Strategy 2011–2025 sets a clear direction for the management of waste in the ACT towards 2025.
The strategy encompasses wastes from the household, commercial and industrial, construction and demolition sectors and biomass from wood and garden waste.
The strategy’s goal is to ensure the ACT leads innovation to achieve full resource recovery and a carbon neutral waste sector. This goal is supported by four key outcomes and identifies 29 strategies that will enable the achievement of the outcomes.

Reports
The ACT Government commissioned Inovact Consulting to examine the barriers the commercial sector faces in managing its waste. The 2010 report contains the results of 400 surveyed businesses about their recycling practices and ways to improve commercial sector recycling. To download the report click here

Draft ACT Sustainable Waste Strategy 2010-2025
Media release: Commercial and organic waste key targets of draft waste strategy 8 December 2010
The draft strategy aims for the ACT to lead innovation in the management of waste to achieve full resource recovery and a carbon neutral waste sector. The draft strategy recognises waste as a valuable resource which, when recovered (reused, recycled or processed), reduces the need for raw materials and can help to address climate change.
Community forums and workshop
A series of 5 community forums on the draft strategy were undertaken.
Submissions
Submissions on the draft ACT Sustainable Waste Strategy 2010–2025 opened on 8 December 2010 and closed on 28 February 2011 with 29 submissions received to date. A full list of submissions are available.
