Australia's Native Vegetation Framework

In 2012 the ACT Government signed Australia’s  Native Vegetation Framework (Framework).

The Framework provides strategic guidance to agencies and organizations in the private and public sector in native vegetation management within the ACT and across Australia.

Guidance is driven through five goals:

Goal 1: Increase national extent and connectivity of native vegetation.

Goal 2: Maintain and improve condition and function of native vegetation.

Goal 3: Maximise native vegetation benefits of ecosystem service markets.

Goal 4: Build capacity to understand, value and manage native vegetation.

Goal 5: Advance the engagement and inclusion of Indigenous peoples in management of native vegetation.

Key achievements highlighted in the Progress Report are:

• an increase in the extent of protected area reserves
• implementation of the ACT and Greater Goorooyarroo Woodlands project that is restoring and connecting 60,000 hectares of the largest remaining box-gum grassy woodland landscape in Australia
• vegetation mapping across the ACT
• world leading research to reintroduce local species including at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary
• release of the Ngunnawal Plant Use book which records the traditional uses and cultural significance of 70 local species of plants
• release of the ACT Nature Conservation Strategy 2013-23, enactment of the ACT Nature Conservation Act 2014 and development of an ACT Environmental Offsets Policy
